Keynote
Sylvia Habel: Being Mindful . . . Being Present
Sylvia has been a trainer in Choice Theory since 2005. She is currently the President of the William Glasser Institute – Australia.
In addressing the theme of the workshop Sylvia will give her views on what Choice Theory has to offer us when considering
Being Mindful – Being Present

Session 1
Steven Shambrook: Me, myself & I, in Choice
-	A serious and most important question . . . posed by the Blue Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland: ‘Who are you?’
-	Jane Eyre stands in front of a mirror and ponders who will take care of her. Vehemently she answers herself: I WILL!
-	You must learn to love yourself before you can love others.
-	Bragger! You must be humble. It’s important to underplay ‘you’, show humility! You’re SO up yourself!
-	Nelson Mandela: It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
What happens when we stop using ‘you’ and focus on ‘I’? After all, in the end, there is only me: alone, solitary! Although, we all know, ‘No man is an island’?
If Choice tells me the only person I have control over is me, then where does that leave me in the Grand-Scheme-of-Things? After all, I’m a construct! And if I’m a construct then maybe if I deconstruct me then I will have a different understanding of the Blue Caterpillar’s question and how this Choice thing underpins it.	Let’s explore this! Oh no! ‘A Adventure!’

Session 2
Sue Berry: Self-evaluation using “Cars R’ Us”
Using the Cars R Us cards provides a practical, straightforward and powerful way to evaluate our current behaviour and choose new ones. In this session you will be invited to choose a recent situation in which you experienced physiological discomfort and then to individually work through a process of personal reflection, exploring your behaviour in this situation. The emphasis is firstly on gaining greater awareness of thinking, feeling, acting components associated with that physiology and secondly, looking to choose and learn more appropriate and resourceful behaviours to gain greater effective, personal control. Using the ‘Cars’ kit is fun! Its visual impact helps to anchor new learning.

Session 3
Liz Tham: New Choices, New Habits
‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.’ Benjamin Franklin
So why do people keep doing the same things over and over again? Why don’t people change? Why do people hurt themselves and others, even if they know that it is wrong? Why is it that they just don’t ‘get it’?
This is a great opportunity for us to revisit these themes and discuss those difficult questions in the light of Choice Theory; understanding how “filters”, “quality world”, “perceived world”, “comparing places” and “creative systems” work together to affect our “total behaviour”. Learn how this can impact both your professional and personal life. Raise your self-awareness to make new and better choices, form new connecting habits, and lead a more satisfying, quality life!

Session 4
Garry Garnaut: Just when I figured out Choice Theory I realised it was me
Garry will look at the application of Choice Theory in his journey towards realising it’s all about perception, and in particular his perception of the world. Garry views his journey of change as a way of acknowledging the incredible freedom Choice Theory has given him and the ongoing challenges it presents. It seems the more you go into Choice Theory the more the personal journey centres on respecting and affirming yourself, as much as it is about respecting and affirming the people around you.
The objective of this session is to present Choice Theory as a genuine, deeply personal model of mental health. You can spend a whole life time teaching Choice Theory without acknowledging that it is really about you. The deeply personal challenge of Choice Theory is to believe you can make a difference in your own life, and in so doing become a genuine teacher for others. Garry will recount some of his experiences from the 20 years or more that he has practised the theory, particularly the times where he gave up, blamed others, and behaved in ways that said, ‘If only people did things my way everything would work out perfectly.’
There is no quick fix to life’s ups-and-downs, except through learning to manage yourself. Using humor, anecdote, random role play and participant interaction, Garry will examine what it means to really live Choice Theory in your own life.
